Why I'm Not Answering Your Email

If you've sent me email, and I haven't responded, there are three likely causes. Either I did send a response, and your system bounced it due to a misconfigured anti-spam filter; or my own email sorting system has decided you aren't interesting; or I haven't gotten to your message yet.

My work

I work to build communities for sharing and the free exchange of ideas. In the mid 90s I became aware of Richard Stallman and the GNU Project. In 2003, I began working to build and improve the public image of GNU. In 2007, after a brief stint in academia and meeting many of my heroes, I began to work on Free Software full time at Sirius. In 2008, having witnessed the confusion of the term 'free culture' for many years, formed CNUK to do the same for artists as GNU did for hackers.

Away from all this, my friends and I formed FooCorp, a small company to do awesome stuff. Currently, we're releasing music by furny (myself and another FooCorper make up 66% of the band), working on our first book publishing and building CNUK. It is possible we may do some other consulting work, but unlikely for the foreseeable future, as we have a TV show to finish.

Speaking

I give talks on software freedom as part of my role in GNU. I can also talk about CNUK and our goals for artistic freedom.

Upcoming talks

None.

What is free software?

"Free software" is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of "free" as in "free speech," not as in "free beer."

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

A program is free software if users have all of these freedoms.

What's this GNU/Linux thing?

Most people have never heard of GNU. Even most of the people who use the GNU system have never heard of GNU, thanks to so many people and companies who teach them to call it "Linux".

Nonetheless, the name GNU has certain associations, which people will discover once they hear the name. GNU is associated with the ideals of freedom of the free software movement. That association is no accident; the motive for developing GNU was specifically to make it possible to use a computer and have freedom.

Contact me

Email

The easiest way to get in touch with me on any non-urgent matter is via email, which I try to read. mattl@gnu.org. An alternative address is mattl@cnuk.org. If you don't get a response within a week, I don't mind if you resend. I get thousands of spam messages a day and I am not on top of looking for false positives.

Download my GPG key.

I only read and respond to email once per day, usually in the early morning of the US/Eastern time zone. If you are trying to reach me on a matter that needs urgent attention in the next 24 hours, please phone my office or find me on IRC (see below). Also, note that I sometimes don't read email at all on weekends.

SIP

If you have Ekiga, or a similar SIP client, you can try and call me mattl@ekiga.net, please note this is not an email address and only works when:

That said, M-F between 11am and 5pm is a likely time for the above to all be true.

Please do not ask me to install Skype, or other proprietary software in order to speak to you. I have access to regular phones as well, but prefer to not use these where possible. For interviews/podcast recordings, we can do a call from my office. Please schedule with me well in advance, and wait for me to confirm.

Articles

I'm not a professional fighter. In fact, I rarely fight at all, however, I have some nonsensical statistics for your viewing pleasure:

Wins All the time.
Losses The occasional lottery ticket and pub bet.
